  • Owned by George Middleton
  • Born: June 19, 1926 in Lubbock, Texas
  • Resident: Hempstead, Texas
  • Family: wife Phyllis
  • Primary Business: Middleton worked for McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis before buying his first Pizza Hut franchise in 1964. He eventually owned 70 restaurants before selling them to PepsiCo in 1988
  • Racing Interest: Originally in the American Quarter Horse business before switching to Thoroughbreds in the mid-1980s
  • Middleton bought the 650-acre Iron County Farm, near Arcadia, Mo., in 1975
  • His best horses bred and/or raced include Nuclear Debate, champion older horse in Italy, France and England, as well as other stakes winners Bare Necessities, Passing Vice, Electric Fanny, Teewinot, Holy Nola (dam of 2004 San Felipe Stakes winner Preachinatthebar), Tough Speed, Christmas Gift, Bright Candles and Bonus Money
  • Has 12 broodmares, including Passing Vice. Shrewd Vixen, the dam of Bare Necessities, was sold during the 2000 Keeneland November sale
  • Currently has 22 horses in training, including 2-year-olds, with Wally Dollase and Frank Kirby. The star of the stable this year is Bare Necessities, winner of the Gardenia Handicap at Ellis Park and Sixty Sails Handicap at Hawthorne
  • Interesting Note: Middleton's father-inlaw, the late Phil Harris, sang the song "Bare Necessities" as the voice of Baloo the Bear in the Disney movie "The Jungle Book."
  • Bare Necessities is the farm's first Breeders' Cup starter as an owner and follows Nuclear Debate as the second as a breeder.
