  • Owner(s): Frank & Mattie Justice
  • Born: Frank: May 20, 1932, Pikeville, Ky. Died Feb. 25, 2012
  • Residence: Amelia Island, Fla.
  • Family: children Bridget, Karla Corbin, Frank II and Jason; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The two sons share their father's interest in the horse business and own racehorses and broodmares of their own. Frank II is in the coal business and is the mayor of Pikeville, Ky., while Jason focuses on real estate development.
  • Dell Ridge Farm is comprised of four separate farms that total 800 acres in the Central Kentucky Bluegrass region of Fayette and Bourbon Counties. Dell Ridge owns 18 broodmares and boards another 55 for clients.
  • Dell Ridge Farm is a commercial breeder that targets its yearlings for the Keeneland September sale. However, they often retain a share in their products such as Noble Tune and Honor Code.
  • Dell Ridge currently has seven racehorses in partnerships including Noble Tune, runner-up in 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, and Honor Code. Both were produced by the mare Serena’s Cat. Dell Ridge has two yearlings targeted to join the racing stable in 2014 including a daughter of Serena’s Cat.
  • Dell Ridge Farm purchased Noble Tune’s and Honor Code’s dam, Serena’s Cat, as a weanling for $1.4-million at the 2003 Keeneland November sale. She became a stakes winner and won four of 12 starts while earning $131,391 for Dell Ridge. Her first foal is Noble Tune, runner-up in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and her second foal is Honor Code. She has a Bernardini yearling filly, a 2013 Tapit colt, and is pregnant to Tapit for the 2014 season.
  • Ryan said on Sept. 27, 2013 that the elder Frank Justice took a special interest in Honor Code when he was a youngster. “Honor Code was special from the day he was born,” Ryan said. “He meant a lot to Frank when he was a foal. He was a favorite on the farm – pretty, smart, and great to be around.”
  • Dell Ridge Farm bred Violence, an early favorite for the 2013 Kentucky Derby before an injury forced his retirement.
  • Frank Justice got into the horse business in 1998 when he purchased the property formerly occupied by Hill 'n' Dale Farm near Lexington, Ky. He retained Desmond Ryan as farm manager and credited Ryan, still holding the job, as crucial to the operation’s success.
  • The late Frank Justice and partners started Coal Mac in 1971 and sold out to Ashland Coal in 1988. Before getting into the coal business, Justice owned and operated a Jerry's Restaurant and a Long John Silver's. He also was a county commissioner In Pikeville, KY.
