Dan Hendricks

In The News:

 Biography, Highlights and Media:

  • Born: Dec. 5, 1958, Los Angeles
  • Residence: Glendora, Calif.
  • Family: sons Christopher, Matthew and Gregory
  • Racing Background: Father Lee and uncle Byron, who were twins, were also trainers … Cousin Jacque Fulton is an ex-trainer … Grew up in Rancho Santa Fe … First job at the track was with the late trainer Willard Proctor … Spent nine years with Richard Mandella before going on his own in 1987
  • Racing Career: In racing, hope springs eternal as the 2-year-olds show up each year and that's the case with veteran trainer Dan Hendricks. His Rigoletta is a promising, though inexperienced, filly who is being pointed towards the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. With only a maiden win behind her, Rigoletta finished a solid third in the Darley Debutante (G1) at Del Mar this summer to potentially earn the trip to Churchill Downs for the Breeders' Cup ... First stakes win for Hendricks came with Toulange in the 1987 Fleet Treat at Del Mar … Trained Gray Slewpy, a former Santa Anita track record holder at 5 1/2 furlongs and winner of the G3 Ancient Title Breeders' Cup, Potrero Grande, and Count Fleet Sprint Handicaps in 1992. Gray Slewpy, Hendricks’ first Breeders’ Cup starter, finished 11th in the 1992 Sprint … Brother Derek, his second Breeders' Cup starter, finished fourth behind Stevie Wonderboy in the 2005 Juvenile after winning the G2 Norfolk Stakes. The following year the colt swept three stakes, including the Santa Anita Derby (G1), and started as second choice in the Kentucky Derby. Brother Derek finished in a dead heat for fourth with Jazil and had another fourth-place finish in the Preakness. He finished fifth in the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Classic as one of only two Kentucky Derby starters from that year to make the race ... Hendricks saddled his first grade I winner, Private Persuasion, in the 1995 Vanity at Hollywood Park ... Won the 1999 Hollywood Oaks (G2) with Smooth Player, who added the G2 Lady’s Secret Breeders’ Cup and Las Palmas Handicaps the following year … Conditioned multiple graded stakes winner Reba’s Gold, an earner of $717,422, for "Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek … Additional graded stakes winners include Feverish, Stylish Star, Bountiful Native, Blushing Heiress and Daytona (Ire), winner of the 2008 Shoemaker Mile (G1) and 10th in that year's Breeders' Cup Mile ... On July 7, 2004, Hendricks suffered paralysis from the chest down as the result of a spinal cord injury incurred in a motocross accident. Assistant trainer Francisco (Cisco) Alvarado took over his stable during his hospitalization and rehabilitation. Hendricks returned to the track on Aug. 24, 2004 and saddled Littlebitofzip to a victory at Del Mar.
