Carrol Castille

In The News:

 Biography and Highlights:
  • Owner(s): Whispering Oaks Farm
  • Born: Aug. 1, 1966, Carenco, La.
  • Residence: Lafayette, La.
  • Family: wife Stacey; two children
  • Professional Background: Castille co-owns Tower Equities, a cellular phone and radio tower communications company in Lafayette, but says the horses are “a hobby, but almost full-time” … Left the horses in the early 1990s to work on radio towers, literally climbing poles in the beginning as a repairman. He eventually bought into a communications company with a partner for $35,000, scraping together all of his savings, and wound up selling the company for seven figures ... Bought the Evangeline Downs Racetrack in June, 2007, along with 255 acres between Interstate 49 and Moss Street. The track had been closed since 2004, when operations shifted from Carencro to a new facility in Opelousas to take advantage of legalized slot-machine gambling in St. Landry Parish. Castille saw no possibility of racing returning to Carencro but said it still has been difficult to watch the demolition of the old clubhouse, which opened in 1966. The old property is making way for a possible commercial development that Castille will have a voice in. He said he also wants to develop property behind the track into an upscale neighborhood, using money from the commercial and residential projects to fund a $2 million renovation of a horse training facility that will remain at the site. “That’s why I bought it, to make sure it stays here. This will be the elite training center in the Southeast,” said Castille.
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Castille races under the Whispering Oaks Farm banner. The property is a 60-acre farm and training facility near Lafayette complete with a three-quarter-mile training track and 36-stall barn … Currently has 17 broodmares and 45 horses in training, competing on the Louisiana circuit of Evangeline Downs, Delta Downs, Louisiana Downs and Fair Grounds. Brandon Marks is his private trainer … “I’ve been raising and racing horses nearly all my life,” he said. “I’ve bred, owned, galloped and trained, and from time to time get back into it more and more. I’m really excited about some of the babies we have now and where we’re going.” … Began working in the late 1980s at Dee’s Farm and eventually became stallion manager … Has used trainers Cole Norman, Don Cormier and Bernie Flint with some of his past runners, while he also hands-on trains many of his horses … Claimed graded stakes winner Watchem Smokey at Keeneland in 2004 for $100,000 and had the sprint star pointing to a stakes at Delta Downs  … Stable has also included Louisiana-based stakes winners Mr. Barracuda, All Wired Up and Follow the Storm … Castille owns 50 percent of 2005 Arlington-Washington Futurity winner Sorcerer’s Stone, who ran sixth in that year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
