  • Born: Aug. 31, 1948 in Baltimore.
  • Residence: Butler, Md.

  • Janney is a member of the Phipps family, which has been prominent in American racing since his grandmother, Gladys Mills Phipps, formed Wheatley Stable in 1926. In partnership with his cousin Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps, Janney won the 2013 Kentucky Derby with Orb, the family's first victory in America's most famous race.Through the years, Derby horses owned by members of the Phipps family had finished second twice (Easy Goer in 1989, and Dapper Dan in 1965), and third (Awe Inspiring in 1989)."It's really the culmination of horse racing and I am thrilled to be here today," Dinny Phipps said after the Derby.Janney said: "I just couldn't be more delighted that we're doing this together."
  • Introduced to racing through his parents, Stuart and Barbara, who owned the champion filly Ruffian. One of the most beloved fillies of her generation, Ruffian won her first 10 starts before she tragically broke down during a 1975 match race with Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure and was euthanized. She is a member of the Hall of Fame. The Janneys also owned Icecapade and Private Terms.
  • Janney is the chairman of the family owned Bessemer Trust Company and Bessemer Securities Corp. and is a first cousin of Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps. Their great grandfather, Henry Phipps, was a partner of Andrew Carnegie and was the founder of Bessemer Trust. Janney and Phipps sometimes are partners in horses. Janney is the chairman of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and a trustee of Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins University.
  • Homebred Data Link was retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in Oct. 2013 after leading Janney's stable the past two seasons. He won four graded turf stakes, including the 2012 Maker's 46 Mile Stakes (G1). He finished his career with eight wins in 18 starts and purse earnings of $831,335. Air Support, a multiple graded stakes winner who is winless in three starts in 2013, is in training in New York. 
  • Another one of Janney’s successful runners was Coronado’s Quest, who won two Grade 1s, the Haskell and Travers, as a 3-year-old in 1998. Coronado’s Quest also captured the Dwyer (G2) and Riva Ridge (G2) at three and the Remsen (G2) and Cowdin Stakes (G2), and Nashua (G3) at two ... Coronado’s Quest accounted for Janney’s first Breeders’ Cup start, finishing fifth in the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic. His other Breeders' Cup starters were Carriage Trail, who was fourth in the 2008 Ladies' Classic, and Air Support, who was ninth in the 2010 Juvenile Turf. Carriage Trail was run in partnership with the Phipps Stable.  
  • Also owned Hunting, winner of the Stuyvesant (G3) in 2007, and Criminologist, who captured the Noble Damsel and Beaugay in 2008 and the Athenia in 2007 
  • Owns approximately 80 horses, some in partnership with Phipps Stable. Keeps 20 broodmares at Claiborne Farm, in Paris, Ky.
  • Janney is a member of the Board of Trustees of the New York Racing Association and of Keeneland. He is vice-chairman of The Jockey Club and serves as chairman of The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Safety Committee. A past chairman of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA), he remains active with the organization as vice-chairman.
