  • Born: June 2, 1932, Rushville, Neb., but grew up in Washington state
  • Residence: Glendora, Calif.
  • Family: Husband, trainer Mel Stute; children, son Gary (also a trainer), daughters Jana DiGrande and Gail Pinkner; six grandchildren; brother-in-law, trainer Warren Stute
  • Racing Background: Met her husband, Mel, at Portland Meadows when a girlfriend’s father had a horse at the racetrack. Annabelle and Mel were married in 1950 … “I promised Annabelle’s father that I would give her diamonds, minks, and a Mercedes, and she now has all three,” Mel said
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Annabelle began campaigning horses in her own name once their children had finished high school. Mel jokes that he had to give her something to do, and Annabelle lets him think that’s the reason, though she enjoys owning horses and is very involved … Stakes winners Annabelle has owned solely or in partnership include $455,205-earner Hot n Smoggy and Perfect Moon (co-owned with The Hat Ranch) … Annabelle also bred Smokin Mel, named for her husband. Sold to Ed Watchel and Sidney L. Port, Smokin Mel won the 1997 Gotham Stakes and was named the 1997 Washington-bred Horse of the year and the state’s Champion 3-year-old … Annabelle owns about 35 horses now, including mares and young horses. She has four broodmares in California … Though Quick Little Miss, a $40,000 2006 Barretts March sale purchase, will be Annabelle Stute’s first Breeders’ Cup starter, Mel has trained two winners, Brave Raj (1996 Juvenile Fillies) and Very Subtle (1997 Sprint).
