  • Born: June 16, 1944 in Long Beach, Calif.
  • Resident: Arcadia, Calif.
  • Family: wife Joan, sons Davey and Marty
  • Son of Farrell Jones, one of Southern California's top trainers. Gary Jones has won numerous training titles at the Southern California tracks
  • In 1995, has saddled stakes winners Morgana (Palomar Handicap, Melvin Durslag), Auriette (Honeymoon), Pembroke, and Ski Dancer. Jones' 1994 standout, Lakeway, has been brought back slowly to the races this year after getting knocked out of action last fall with a virus
  • In 1994, Jones ranked ninth in the trainers' standings with 66 victories from 301 starts and earnings of $4,160,037
  • Enjoyed his best year in 1992, finishing fourth with earnings of slightly more than $6 million
  • February of 1993, suffered a mild heart attack that caused him to temper his hectic lifestyle. "It may have been a blessing in disguise,'' he told Daily Racing Form. "It was an early warning. It shook me up pretty good.'' Returned to the winner's circle just two weeks later with Marble Maiden, winner of the Buena Vista Handicap
  • In 1976 saddled 47 winners at Santa Anita, shattering the previous mark of 44 set by his father. Roster of prominent clients includes Mike Rutherford and Sheikh Mohammed
  • First winner: the first horse he ever saddled, King Wako, opening day at Santa Anita, December 1975
  • Trained Turkoman, Eclipse Award-winning older male in 1986
  • Sent out Time to Explode to equal a world record for seven furlongs, 1:19 2/5, at Hollywood in 1982, and later that year saddled Beautiful Glass when she set a record for five furlongs on the turf, :55 4/5, at Hollywood
  • Won the first $1-million race in Del Mar history, the 1991 Pacific Classic with Golden Eagle Farm's Best Pal, who is still in Jones' barn
  • Top horses have included Best Pal, Kostroma, who set a 1 1/8-mile turf world record of 1:43 4/5 in the Las Palmas at Oak Tree, Lakeway, Fali Time, Eleven Stitches, Wishing Well (the dam of Sunday Silence), and By Land by Sea
  • Trained Radar Ahead, who was the last horse to beat Horse of the Year Affirmed, in the 1979 San Fernando.
