  • Born: Oct. 24, 1946, New Orleans, La.
  • Residence: Louisville, Ky.
  • Family: wife, former jockey Donna Barton, now an excercise rider for Frank and a television racing analyst
  • Education: Spent two years at the University of Southern Mississippi before deciding he wanted a career with horses
  • Racing Background: The oldest of three sons of a New Orleans electrical contractor, Brothers went to the races as a youngster with his parents … He began riding in the sixth grade and started showing national-caliber Quarter Horses … In 1970, he got a job as a hotwalker with eventual Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg at Fair Grounds … Moved up the ladder during his 10 years with Van Berg and took out his training license in 1972 because he was saddling horses at a variety of tracks for Van Berg's sprawling operation … “Probably for about eight of those 10 years I worked for him I was an assistant trainer. In a lot of those years, the horses ran under the assistant's name; the assistant needed to have a trainer's license."
  • Racing Career: Opened his own stable in 1980 in Louisiana with about 16 horses … Based at Louisiana Downs and Fair Grounds for a number of years before spreading his operation to Oaklawn Park and Kentucky … During the 1980s, Brothers was the leading trainer at Louisiana Downs for nine consecutive years. He was either the leading trainer or the runner-up for nine years at Fair Grounds. Also has training titles from Keeneland and Churchill Downs … Scored first graded victory in the Fair Grounds Classic with Police Inspector in 1984 … Five years later notched first grade 1 victory with Secret Hello in the Arlington-Washington Futurity … In 1989, he became private trainer for Joseph Allbritton's Lazy Lane Farms. Allbritton purchased Hansel as a yearling for $150,000 at the 1989 Keeneland September yearling sale.  Hansel finished 10th in the 1991 Kentucky Derby before winning the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and was voted champion 3-year-old male … Began training for Claiborne Farm in 1996 … For Claiborne he trained Blue Grass Stakes winner Pulpit, who finished fourth in the 1997 Kentucky Derby in his final career start … Pulpit is now a leading sire and the sire of Pyro, Corinthian, Rutherienne, Bsharpsonata, Sky Mesa, Stroll, Essence of Dubai and Passport (whom Brothers trains), among many others … Brothers also trained Passport’s grade 3-winning dam, Trip, for Claiborne … Additional grade 1 winners—First Samurai, Madcap Escapade, Arch and Oath … Has won more than 270 stakes races ... In addition to Passport's victory in the Miller Lite Cradle, Brothers also won the Alcibiades with Bel Air Beauty, the Fountain of Youth with First Samurai and the John Battaglia Memorial with Laity this year ... He operates a public stable with clients including Claiborne and Bruce Lunsford ... Fillies Bel Air Beauty and Tessa Blue were his stakes stars in 2007. In addition to winning the Alcibiades at Keeneland in 2006, she won the G3 Valley View in 2007. Tessa Blue won the Indiana Oaks (G3) and the Inside Information Stakes on the Breeders’ Cup undercard at Monmouth last fall ... In 2008, Brothers trains Big Glen, winner of Turfway Park's Rushway Stakes.
