  • Born: Sept. 8, 1961 in West Grove, Pa.
  • Residence: Ellicott City, Md.
  • Family: Wife, Christina; Daughters, Danielle, Victoria and Evana; Brother Michael is a trainer.
  • Through Dec. 31, 2007, he was ranked 23rd in the nation with earnings of $7,967,128. In 2007 he had 183 wins from 961 mounts.
  • With Hard Spun his only mount, he made his Breeders' Cup debut in 2007 a successful one by setting the pace in the Classic and holding the place spot. 
  • 2007 has been a breakout year for Pino as the regular rider of major stakes winners Hard Spun, who was second in the Kentucky Derby, and Diabolical, winner of the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1). In addition to the Derby, has ridden Hard Spun to four stakes victories, including the G2 Kentucky Cup Classic, where he successfully turned the tables on Derby winner Street Sense.
  • Pino, who has been based in Maryland throughout his career, rates as one of the sport's most successful jockeys. In his 29th year as a rider, he stands 15th on the all-time win list, but is third among active riders with more than 5,900 victories. He currently trails Russell Baze and Earlie Fires ... The all-time leader in wins at Maryland tracks, he has won more than 30 graded stakes and earned more than $100 million.
  • Made his first trip to the winner's circle on January 16, 1978 with Ed's Desire at the now shuttered Bowie ... Earned his first career grade 1 in the 2006 Prioress Stakes aboard Wildcat Bettie B. Hard Spun and Wildcat Bettie B, both trained by Larry Jones, account for six of his 12 stakes wins in 2007.
  • Pino celebrated his 41st birthday in 2002 by winning his 5,000th career race.  
  • Rode Sweetnorthernsaint to victory in the 2006 Miracle Wood Stakes, but underwent hernia surgery that prevented him from riding the colt in the major 3-year-old races. Sweetnorthernsaint finished seventh as the post-time favorite in the Kentucky Derby. Pino has ridden Sweetnorthernsaint to two graded stakes-placed finishes in ’07.
  • Has topped 200 wins in a year on 12 occasions.
  • Was a finalist for the 2007 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, which was presented to Jon Court.
  • Captured his 6,000th win on Nov. 7, 2007, at Laurel Park, the 15th North American jockey to reach that plateau. He was aboard Pass Play, a gelding trained by his brother Michael Pino.
