  • Racing Background: Grew up in the same neighborhood as Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel … Began his career in the racing industry as a hot-walker at Belmont and Aqueduct at age 17 … Purchased his first horse while a student at UNC, borrowing money and working summer jobs to pay for the New York claimer. “Throughout life, I’ve loved the sport,” Blum said. “I didn’t have any family involved in the game. It’s something I picked up with a passion.” … Burst onto the major racing scene with Life Cycle, a horse he bought for $1,400. Life Cycle defeated Cougar II in the 1973 Hollywood Invitational. Life Cycle also was one of Frankel’s first major winners as a trainer
  • Racing Operation: In 1974, Blum purchased the broodmare Mono, whose maternal family traces back to Man o’ War and who is the third dam of Pro Pink. “Mono became the foundation mare for my best horses,” Blum said. She produced stakes winners Rare Performer, A Sure Hit and Channing Road, as well as Mine Only, the dam of three other stakes winners … Over the years, Blum has bred and sold such horses as Ashland winner Well Chosen, multiple grade 1 winner Devil His Due (who earned $4 million) and Irish champion Tomahawk (sold for $2.5 million at the 2001 Keeneland July yearling sale) … An avid baseball fan, Blum is a friend of Atlanta Braves’ general manager John Schuerholz and has named some of his horses for his friend, including G.M. John and Schuerholz … Blum maintains a broodmare band of 15-20 mares, which he boards at Gerry Dilger’s Dromoland Farm in Lexington. Dromoland acts as agent for Blum’s consignments to yearling sales … Blum’s mares include Sassy Pants, dam of Breeders' Cup Sprint pre-entrant and multiple stakes winner Dubai Escapade … Has several horses in training with Jimmy Jerkens and Bruce Levine, including a 2-year-old half-brother to Dubai Escapade by High Yield named Real Estate … Blum sold Pro Pink to Joe Novogratz for $25,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale. He sold Field of Dreams, Pro Pink’s dam, in foal to Lemon Drop Kid for $27,000 to Iwin Farms LLC, agent, at the 2005 Keeneland November mixed sale. He repurchased the mare privately earlier this year and is considering breeding her to Awesome Again, sire of Dubai Escapade, in 2007 … Blum’s previous Breeders’ Cup starters as breeder are Devil His Due (eighth in the 1993 Classic, 11th in the 1994 Classic), Tomahawk (eighth in the 2002 Juvenile), and La Spia (second in 1991 Juvenile Fillies, bred in partnership with Calumet Farm).
